چکیده

The objective of this study is to investigate the suitability of remote sensing data to calibrate a distributed hydrological model of a Nepalese Himalayan headwater catchment. Snow cover data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite are used to calibrate the snow and glacier routine of the conceptual hydrological model TAC. The snow cover information is useful to constrain the hydrological model in the calibration phase, especially in data-scarce regions. Simulation results using the MODIS calibrated parameter sets are evaluated against independent observations measured discharge data and glacier mass balance measurements of the Langtang Khola catchment. The constraint posed in the calibration phase by the spatially distributed observations allows a reduction in the equifinality problem, thus producing a better balance among the modelled processes and a more plausible partitioning of the different runoff components. Accordingly, we demonstrate that the use of a remote sensing-based additional source of information allows enhancing streamflow predictions for data scarce areas, thus also allowing water resources assessment in remotely located regions.

Implementation of a process-based catchment model in a poorly gauged, highly glacierized Himalayan headwater

The paper presents a catchment modeling approach for remote glacierized Himalayan catchments. The distributed catchment model TACD, which is widely based on the HBV model, was further developed for the application in highly glacierized catchments on a daily timestep and applied to the Nepalese Himalayan headwater Langtang Khola (360 km2). Low laying reference stations are taken for temperature ...

Impact of snow state variation for design flood simulations in glacierized catchments

A continuously running hydrological energy balance model was used to analyse the influence of different snow covers on the formation of large floods within glacierized catchments. Model outputs from three different catchments in the Austrian Alps with glacierizations ranging from 30 to 39 % were statistically interpreted to cover a wide range of possible combinations of areal snow cover distrib...

Assimilation of MODIS Snow Cover Area Data in a Distributed Hydrological Model Using the Particle Filter

Snow is an important component of the water cycle, and its estimation in hydrological models is of great significance concerning the simulation and forecasting of flood events due to snow-melt. The assimilation of Snow Cover Area (SCA) in physical distributed hydrological models is a possible source of improvement of snowmelt-related floods. In this study, the assimilation in the LISFLOOD model...

شبیه سازی سطح پوشش برف و رواناب ناشی از ذوب آن در حوزه ‌آبخیز هرو - دهنو در استان لرستان

Given the importance of snow, it seems necessary to predict its resultant runoff for optimized usage. In addition, due to snowbound regions cloudiness in winter season, the notice of snow cover area (SCA) using satellite images is difficult. Hence, to help better water resources managing in mountainous areas using supplementary methods for simulating the SCA is necessary. As a case study, Horo-...

Hydrological modelling of glacierized catchments focussing on the validation of simulated snow patterns – applications within the flood forecasting system of the Tyrolean river Inn

The catchment of the river Inn is located in the Swiss and Austrian Alps. In the frame of the flood forecasting system “HoPI” (Hochwasserprognose für den Tiroler Inn), the Austrian part of the river Inn and its tributaries are covered within a hybrid numerical model. The runoff from the glacierized headwaters of the south-western Inn tributaries is calculated using the Snowand Icemelt Model “SE...
